Anri Sala — Purchase Not By Moonlight
Contemporary Art Center Cincinatti & Museum of Contemporary Art Miami
Exhibition Catalogue
2009

The exhibition Purchase not by Moonlight is dedicated to the co-dependency of light, space, and the observer. Anri Sala interlaces film, projection, and lights in an installation matrix, where the body of the observer can only occupy one “Raumstelle” or place at a time. Walking through the exhibition, the observers attention switches between awareness of themselves and the film projections.

The book Purchase not by Moonlight presents photographs and video stills of several pieces of work by Sala. Talking to the curator, the artist himself leads the way through the book and his different works. The page layout takes its measure from his finger widths, whilst the text columns follow the hand widths of the authors. Once you open the catalogue, your hands become part of the book space. The photos taken at daylight have been printed with moonlight.
